By Samten Williams Contributing Editor

San Francisco - A forum of international dermatologist discussed global dermatology pearls at the American Academy of Dermatology annual meeting. The group of physician, led by Torello M. Lotti, M.D., addressed topics that included biothecnology, a new treatment for vitiligo.

Phototherapy for vitiligo - Rafael Falabella, M.D., of Cali, Colombia, presented a revolutionary Microphototherapy called BIOSKIN®. This Microphototherapy produces a sourge of UVB radiation light of 311 nm. "This wavelength is ... the only one that is able to simulate melanocyte cells in the white patches of vitiligo," said Dr. Lotti. An optical fiber brings the 311 - nm UVB energy directly into the affected site. This UVB penetraction is able to induce repigmentation of the white patches in 72 percent of cases, said Dr. Lotti. "this new therapy has never been presented before in the treatment of vitiligo, a condition that affects 1 percent of the population in south America, The United States and Europe".
